Nano USM is a newly developed motor system for lenses, which combines the smoothness and silence of an STM (Stepping Motor) with the speed of the Canon ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor). The focus ring of the EF-S 18-135mm IS USM is up to 2.5 times faster at wide-angle and up to 4.3 times faster at telephoto, compared to the previous model, the EF-S 18-135mm IS STM. The Nano USM unit has a flexible metal housing and a ceramic power element. By applying a change of the frequency and phase of the high-frequency voltage on the ceramic power element, control of both the direction of rotation as the rotation speed is achieved. This combination of frequency and phase control, together with a control algorithm provides for a drive system of lenses that is perfect for photography and video recordings.
